HD’s higher resolution, broader color space, and advanced compression algorithms have opened the door for a substantial improvement in video quality, even for the most prosaic of home movies. Though prices for consumer models hover well above the budgets of many wanna-haves, as more units trickle into the market in 2007 we expect the prices to drop into mainstream territory. And pros need HD capabilities to stay competitive: even if you’re not quite ready to go HD-only, some of the entry-level pro models are priced reasonably enough to merit an educational investment.

Why put your event on Blu-ray?

The technology used by videographers has certainly advanced leaps and bounds in just the last few years. For instance, if you were to get married ten years ago you would have received your special day on a VHS tape. 5 years ago most videographers would give their clients a DVD copy of their wedding. Today, the way to go is High Definition. Blu-ray is the next generation in viewing video and it’s a proven format that looks amazing. When comparing DVD to Blu-ray there are many things to consider. DVD is a standard definition format. A DVD can only hold about 4.7GB of data whether it be video, images, music or anything in a digital format. A single layer Blu-ray, on the other hand, can hold up to 25GB. That’s a lot of data… about 5 times the amount of a DVD.

What does this mean for your videos? Higher definition picture, higher quality sound, higher quality menus and bonus features. Of course, the videographers here at Videoto do much more than wedding videos. Sporting events, corporate videos, ads, training videos, birthday parties, holiday celebrations, bar/bat mitzvahs, these are just a few examples of what our videographers can capture in High Defintion and put onto a Blu-ray disc.

Need a slide show for your special event? Why not put that on a Blu-ray? Our editors can create high quality slide shows for any event and with 1080p high definition, your slide shows will look great and your guests will be amazed.

What does the p stand for in 1080p? Progressive. The videos we’ve been used to for so long on VHS and DVD are interlaced. Interlacing is just a fancy way of letting you know the signal you are viewing is compressed. When a video is interlaced we are not seeing the entire image on the screen at once. TVs are made of of lines of resolution. An interlaced signal plays the odd lines first, then the even lines. The images flash so quickly that it gives off the illusion of a continuous image. However, the issue with Interlaced video is that movement can create a blurry effect. This is why when you are watching a movie on an old VHS tape or a DVD you will see tiny lines at the edge of your TV. With Progressive scanning you are seeing the entire picture. Every line is on screen at the same time and therefore you get a much cleaner, more crisp image. Our videographers shoot High defintion video in the progressive format, which is what you typically see on a Blu-ray disc. With high defintion the image resolution is 1920×1080… compare that to the 720×480 resolution you get from a DVD.

The best possible way for you to view High Definition footage on your TV is on a Blu-ray disc and HD TVs are becoming more popular by the day. One great thing about Blu-ray players is that they can still play your DVDs. In fact, many Blu-ray players offer a DVD upscaling feature which digitally enhances the quality of the DVDs you already own, so they look better on a High Defintion TV. How convenient is that?

Know Your Camcorder
The best method you can employ to make sure you know what you’re doing is to know your equipment inside and out. Make sure you read the manual and any online documentation you can find about your particular camcorder model. Fumbling around with the camera during any particular moment could ruin the whole shot if you don’t know what to do. Make sure you know each menu, and what each of the options do, and how to access the common features such as zoom, autofocus, record, pause etc.

Be Prepared
Make sure you are prepared for the environment in which you will be recording at. Whenever you take your camcorder with you, there are some key items you should always bring.

Spare battery

Blank tapes/memory cards

Lens cleaner

Camcorder wires and cables

Accessories: microphones lighting, lens filters

Lighting adjustments
Lighting is one of the most critical aspects of a videography shoot. Bad lighting conditions could very well ruin the whole project, depending on the look you’re going for. Most cameras don’t do a very good job under poor lighting conditions, often producing grainy, hard to see images, which can’t be touched up in post-production. If at all possible, it’s best to shoot outdoors, during the daytime, as the ambient sunlight will ensure your scene is fully lit. Our advice for when the lights are too low for where you’re sooting is to disable the autofocus features on your camcorder, otherwise you risk getting that annoying pulsing effect from the lens trying to lock onto a subject.

Audio levels
Along with lighting, audio is another critical component to a good shot. If you’re going for a professional quality shoot, you should be prepared with extra microphones to capture the myriad of sounds around you. The built-in mics that come stock with your camcorders are generally not the best, and can be improved many times over by using a good quality external microphone. This is especially important if shooting any sort of interview or other scenes with heavy dialogue.

Set up the shots
Photographers often employ a “rule of thirds” guideline. The guideline proposes that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines (like a tic-tac-toe), and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections. Proponents of the technique claim that aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject would. Setting up your videography shots using this same principal is a good practice, and creates more dramatic shots. It’s also wise to go easy on your camcorders built-in effects, as you can always add these in later using video editing software.

Managing Zoom levels
Zooming on your camcorder is a nice feature which allows you to take close up shots without physically moving closer to the targer subject. However, be careful not to zoom in too far into the “digital zoom” territory, which creates a pixelated mess when viewed later. Digital zoom is misleading because as you increase the zoom level, the camcorder crops further and further into the center of the image, enlarging that cropped portion so it fills the screen, resulting in choppy, pixelated video. We recommend turning this feature off in your camcorder options to prevent over-zooming.

Video cameras have been in high demand across the world since the development of video. Throughout the past couple decades, there’s been several different models and sizes of cameras and many different formats to choose from. One of the first video cameras available was the Betamax and VHS camcorders. Both of these formats were battling each other for the top consumer spot in the marketplace. Each of them had their own advantages and disadvantages, with Betamax having superior quality, while VHS boasted longer recording times. In the end, VHS came out on top and soon VCR sales exploded across the country as well as camcorders.

Although convenient and easy to use, VHS camcorders were pretty bulky and could be tiresome to use. In response to the demand for a smaller recording device, the VHS-C tape was developed which was a much smaller version of the VHS tape which could be used in a specialized adapter to play in a standard VCR. This smaller form proved to be popular as it allowed for camcorders that could be held in the palm of your hand, without requiring additional equipment to view the tapes. The average recording time of a VHS-C tape was about 30 minutes and was seen as the main drawback of the format.

To counter this problem, Sony introduced the Video8 recording system in 1985. Video8 tapes were seen as beneficial because they had superior recording quality, and had the capability to be recorded up to 2 hours on one tape. The disadvantage consumers found with the Video8 format was that they weren’t compatible with the wildly popular VCRs that people had grown to love. In order to play back any footage, and expensive Video8 player was needed or the camcorder must be plugged in and wired into the television.

The word combines “video” from Latin, meaning “I see” or “I apprehend”, with the Greek terminal ending “graphy”, meaning “to write”. Its contemporary sense is rooted in an article titled “Videography” What Does It All Mean? (American Cinematographer, October 1972).

Videography is the process of capturing moving images on electronic media such as video tape, hard drive, DVD, Blu-ray etc. Videography can also be described as the art of shooting video. It’s a way to provide viewers of your material a cinematic experience by employing modern techniques to make your footage look edgy, colorful and full of life. videographers typically employ a variety of methods, depending on the situation, such as lighting manipulation, changing out cameras or lenses, setting up multiple cameras and stationary cameras, and using external microphones to capture all of the sounds around them. It’s common to find videographers at large social events such as weddings, corporate events, business meetings, presentations and sporting events.

The rise of digital imaging and video in the late 90s and early 2000s started to blur the line between what we know as videography and cinematography. The fast growth of home computers and the internet has paved the way for videography to now cover many more fields than just shooting video with a camercorder, including digital animation (such as Flash), gaming, web streaming, video blogging, still slideshows, remote sensing, spatial imaging, medical imaging, security camera imaging, and in general the production of most bitmap- and vector-based assets. As videography progresses further, videographers may produce their work entirely on a computer without ever involving an imaging device, using software-based components.

A videographer may be the actual camera operator or they may be the person in charge of the visual design of a production (the latter being more or less the equivalent of a cinematographer).
